His influential images emphasized the beauty of Japan’s rural countryside through the illumination of land and water by sun- and moonlight and the changing seasons. But it was his snow scenes—from softly falling snowflakes to brisk flurries—that earned him a reputation as the “Artist of Snow.” The 1953 print Snow at Zojoji Temple was commissioned from Hasui and his printmaking partners by the Japanese gov- ernment to recognize as an Intangible Cultural Treasure, and shortly before his death, Hasui himself was named a Living National Treasure. One of the greatest artists of the shin hanga movement, Hasui produced over 600 woodblock prints during his 40-year career.
